Do-it-yourself dessert

Emily Jarecki, a freshman elementary education major from Columbus and Topperz employee, demonstrates how to dish up the dessert. She starts with Red Velvet Cake yogurt, adds hot fudge, fresh pineapple and tops it off with whipped cream.

The best to way describe Topperz, the new frozen yogurt shop south of UNK, is a do-it-yourself dessert buffet. They offer seven flavors of frozen yogurt, as well as vanilla ice cream and more than 50 toppings including cereals, candy, fresh fruit and Ghirardelli specialty syrups.

Topperz introduces the weigh and pay approach to pricing. First you get a dish, fill it with your favorite yogurt or mix and match the flavors, add the toppings you want and take it to the counter to weigh it. The customer pays 38 cents an ounce.

“At Topperz you make your own choices,” said John Lowe, owner and operator of Topperz. “You can mix and match flavors, add as many toppings as you want and have as little or as much as you want.”

The flavors are rotated, so new flavors of yogurt are always being introduced. “Holidays will bring special flavors including a green mint yogurt for St. Patrick’s Day,” Lowe said.

Lowe started Topperz as a place to employ his three teenage sons. “I want my boys to learn about people skills and how to handle money.” Lowe said there are other versions of the franchise but his is the only one in Nebraska.

Topperz opened Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. and gave away free samples on the first day. According to Emily Jarecki, a freshman elementary education major from Columbus and Topperz employee, they gave away 54 free cups of yogurt.

“New York Cheesecake and Red Velvet Cake have been our most popular flavors so far,” Jarecki said. “People have really liked the fresh fruit that we offer.”

Lowe said the fruit is cut fresh daily and includes kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. They offer other unique toppings including granola, raisins and chocolate covered sun flower seeds.

Topperz sets itself apart from other ice cream and yogurt establishments by embracing the do-it-yourself side of dessert and offering the most toppings among its competition.
