Bryan keeps busy as Greek life advisor

For Claire Bryan, this past year hasn’t been easy.

As a graduate student from Katy, Texas, mastering in student affairs, Bryan now also holds two UNK positions on top of a rigorous class schedule.

Bryan came into the school year fully aware of the responsibilities it took to be in charge of the Greek housing at University Residence North. As a Gamma Phi Beta alumna, Bryan was sought out to take the position because of her experience with the Greek community. In her position, Bryan works to maintain the housing complex—dealing with damages, accidents and dining and living conditions.

“The hardest part about running the complex is actually dealing with my friends. I’ve known a lot of the people here for a long time, and it’s hard when they get in trouble. The best part though is that it’s like always being in college. It never ends,” Bryan said.

In the last month, however, Bryan became even busier as she took over as UNK’s student Greek advisor. The position works with sororities and fraternities both on and off campus. “I was appointed the position, actually, and was named lead during the transition process. I have two other grad assistants that work with me. I’ll keep the position until June, and then hopefully we’ll have a full time Greek advisor to fill the spot,” Bryan said.

Bryan said she had to jump right in the first week. “My first week on the job we lost a Greek member, and it shook everyone up pretty bad.

It made the first week a very big challenge, especially since I had just started.”

She said, “The best part so far about being in the position is just the fact that the Greeks are a community together, and it’s something very fun to be in charge of and a part of.”

Bryan will graduate in May of 2012 with her masters in student affairs. She says it’s been a long, sometimes bumpy road but a very rewarding one.

“I want to continue with Greek life or with nonprofit management in Denver. That’s the ultimate goal,” Bryan said.
